The Cost of Living (Original)

ABOUT THIS ART PIECE

What is the true cost of living? Following current events and recent news stories (or lack thereof) featuring children and the lack of humanitarian efforts for those deemed “unworthy” by Western media, this piece was created to explore the juxtaposition of monetary value against the stark reality of our real world in which people from all walks of life navigate.

This artwork features a child, coarsely painted in dark navy acrylics, then sanded down, surrounded by various real receipts, cheques, money, and price tags. The frame of this piece was custom made with repurposed wood to fit this piece and intentionally left unfinished with natural wood grain exposed. This all mingles together to start a conversation about the real cost of living.

SIZE: 18 in X 42 in

HOW IT'S MADE

This piece started on wood composite using various found objects related to money, including cheques, old sales tags, price tags, receipts, real US currency, and other objects. Once set with my custom mixed matte medium blend, the image is painted on with acrylic paint then sealed, then sanded down to create a tattered appearance. This piece has was then sealed with coats of gloss varnish for seal.

A fully custom made solid wood Canadian Pine frame that has been hand cut to size by the artist and stained to finish in a natural wood semi-gloss varnish is included with this art piece.

NOTE ABOUT WOOD MATERIALS: Heads up! This art and/or its frames are made with new, reclaimed and/or repurposed wood (ex: frames may be made with reused fence stakes/panels, wood scraps too small for use elsewhere may be reused for the back of a handmade frame, wood art canvases may be hand cut from left over construction materials, etc.).

This may result in slightly uneven or slight imperfections in finishes, as this piece and/or it's frames were completely custom cut and made from wood. This is by design and this piece is perfectly imperfect, just the artist intended and envisioned!
